Victoria Azarenka will play against Ekaterina Makarova in quarterfinal tennis match on this year’s US Open. Makarova beat all her opponents easily, and she is currently in a fantastic form!

Makarova easily beat Min, Hercog and Diyas, and in the fourth round she made an upset, and won against young Canadian star, Eugenie Bouchard, who played two semifinals and one final of the Grand Slam tournaments this season!

It is true that Bouchard was not in the best form after Wimbledon and she had problems with heat in that match, since it was almost unbearable for her, but Makarova played some excellent tennis and made it through that round.

The Russian is a player who can beat anybody, but also lose easily to opponents that shouldn’t even be on her radar. Her tally of Grand Slam victories includes many matches against top 10 players, so Azarenka should be very careful against her.

Azarenka currently leads in head to head matches by 3-2, but Makarova won their previous encounter, in Madrid last year by 2:1. She is currently ranked as number 18 in the world, which is her best career rank, and after the US Open she will be even higher, especially if she beats Azarenka tonight.

Azarenka, on the other hand, played a solid tournament after a niggling injury which cost her a lot of points this year, so she is currently number 17. Additionally, if she loses this early, she will drop out of the top 20, because she played in the last year’s final in US Open, so she has a big motive in this match, but the pressure could also be immense.

In the fourth round, Azarenka played against the greatest sensation of the US Open, Serbian Aleksandra Krunic, who came out of the qualifications. Krunic played a fantastic tournament, pushed Azarenka to the limits, but she didn’t make it in the end, and the Belarus won by 2:1 (4:6, 6:4, 6:4) in a very tight encounter.

When we compare these two results, we could tell that Makarova, who beat a top 10 player, is certainly a favorite to win against Azarenka, but when we look at the quality of those matches, we must tell that Azarenka and Krunic played a far better match than Makarova and Bouchard, so, even though it may seem like a far-fetched assumption, if Azarenka plays as she did against Krunic, Makarova’s chances to beat her are slim. Nevertheless, we expect a very interesting encounter.
