How Many Private Tennis Lessons Should a Junior Player Have a Week — 6 Comments

  1. I agree with you that it is vital to play matches and lots of matches.
But the children need to train game situations on a regular basis.
This is where the coach can watch the children to see if they can play with accuracy, consistency, good shot selection including correct spins and speed for a given situation.
This is then transferred to the matches.
If a child has a problem with a situation say for example they cant get enough depth from there back hand when they are in a defensive postion that is where the coach needs to teach with good feed back how to acomplish this.
You will only know if the child has learned this when you see them in a match situation

  2. Hi Derek,

I agree with your style of teaching, but a young child has many topics to train before her/his tactical performance has appropriate ball-quality. So I’m convinced that the ratio training/match-play has to evolve with his/her competence.
Something like this 80/20 for U10 – 60/40 for U15 – 20/80 for U18 female – 30/70 for U18 male players. This you can adapt to personal preference/development of player.

  3. My opinion concerning private lessons for +10y is following:

    1 session technical/tactical/mental: 1h5 a week
    1 session tennis specif coordination/physical: 1h5 a week

This should be sufficient to insure optimal development.
The rest of practices should be group-events, also other sports
One tennis-match a week is also sufficient to evaluate the progressions.

  4. I’m sorry just let me know if kids can’t hit balls probably the should not playing matches at all till the learn all court technique

  5. Hi,

    first part is open minded

second part of the article is more of the same, maybe coach talk

    regards!

  6. Got a coming-up-to-10 year old who shows talent, wants to play and is keen to improve. But I can’t see where he gets to play these games and sets he has to play to improve. The whole tennis scene in England is stultifying. At school he has to supply the racquets to his mates so they can knock a ball about during breaks.
