Talent vs Training in Sport — 3 Comments

  1. As a coach to many national juniors I can safely say that hard work and desire dedinitely is hightened with talent. The kids that generally sit on top of U.S. junior tennis have bothe + money.

  2. As described in my book “Coaching Mastery” the vast majority of players who reached highly skilled levels of ability were seldom the “gifted” players. I agree with your assessment and have seen way too many examples of average players becoming exceptional players through correct training and dedication.

  3. Have to really agree with Richard, the fact that all the talent and or hard work are meaningless if you can’t afford to play enough ITF, USTA and futures circuit then atp or wta. NO 2d chances if you don’t have enough money to make any wrong decisions. This is why i know the 2d tier top level pros for instance 100-500 many are not the best tennis players but the ones that can afford to stay on tour and keep chasing the dream and chasing the pts all over the world especially the easier tournaments located in expensive areas to reach. One problem with talented players is things initially come too easily for them and when it comes time to push and work through minor improvements becomes difficult they don’t have the wherewithal to work hard enough with dedication to pass through some of these levels. In the higher the level for instance USTA tourneys the richer the parents are of the players playing. Just go to the parking lot and the cars will tell it all.
