Discussing the Results of Roland Garros – The French Open 2013

We discussed the results of the French Open and perspective of American tennis players with a tennis coach.

Maria Sharapova lost again  to Serena Williams in the final of Roland Garros. It was predictable. A few people believed that Sharapova was able to beat Williams. How must Maria Sharapova play to win Serena Williams?

Serena’s best is better than Maria’s best. They both know that. I would try hitting deep down the middle to take away Serena’s movement advantage, and try some short slices to bring Serena to net, then blast the ball past her. It’s probably too late to learn how to serve on balance.

Rolans Garros is over. Four American women reached quarterfinals and it was pretty surprising. Serena Williams won the one more Grand Slam, and her victory was absolutely predictable. Now American women tennis has only one star Serena Williams. Who from the others women players is able to reach at least top 10 in the nearest future?

Sloane Stephens appears to have separated herself from the rest of the field. Serena has, too, but at a much higher level. There are no Serena’s in sight, and Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka are young enough to dominate for a while after she gives up her crown.

On the men’s side we do not see any American stars on the tour. John Isner and Sam Querrey are very good players but they hardly can compete for top 10. Ryan Harrison, Jack Sock and Steve Johnson have a good potential. What about their perspective to reach top 20 at least in the future?

Ryan Harrison doesn’t have enough game to make top 20. Steve Johnson might, but I see him as 20 to 50. Jack Sock has a similar game to Stevie’s but does everything better. With a little maturity, I see him as having the potential to win a major. Except that Grigor Dimitrov is the same age. Maybe we can make him an American.
